Lewis Energy Group – San Antonio, Texas, USA

Company Profile

Lewis Petro Properties is a fully integrated exploration and production company with over 25 years of experience. Combining experience with the newest innovations, Lewis Petro Properties discovers and produces oil and gas in South Texas.

Situation

Lewis Energy required a manned mud logging system to monitor drilling rigs to provide critical process parameter information in real-time. Lewis Energy sought a system that would be easy to use, configure and provide both enhancement and expansion capabilities. The system needed to be easily repeated as new rigs come online so that these rigs can also be monitored. In addition, the software/hardware platform needed the ability to operate in an unmanned configuration providing the same monitoring capabilities when full mud logging service wasn’t required.

Solution

Measuresoft proposed and installed a solution based on its ScadaPro and DrillPro products, running on the Microsoft Windows XP platform. The ScadaPro system was configured to acquire data from Alpha data acquisition modules. Measuresoft also provided the ScadaPro Internet Server software that allows users to view live and historical data using Internet Explorer. This allows users in the company’s head quarters in San Antonio to log on remotely and monitor the rigs progress.

All instrumentation and on-site systems are housed in a transportable unit that was provided by the Measuresoft office from Houston.

All data is logged to an SQL Server database at each rig site. SQL Server replication is used to replicate each database via a satellite Internet connection to a server computer in a Data Center in the companies San Antonio head quarters. This approach enabled another requirement that data would reside at two locations concurrently so that in the event of a catastrophe data would not be lost.

Lewis Energy IT personnel manage the databases and web site from their headquarters which displays data in the form of configurable monitors and trend displays.

Benefits
  • Comprehensive measurement collection significantly increases the accuracy of readings: rather than estimating, ScadaPro allows users to pinpoint precise changes in drilling activities.

  • ScadaPro’s real-time measurement capability provides higher accuracy and reliability, ensuring better process results and reduces process uniformity defects.

  • The system can easily be expanded to monitor more points per rig and be extended to include additional rigs.

  • Leveraging the Microsoft platform provides a solution that is accessible throughout the corporate network.

  • Operator familiarity with the Windows user interface reduces training costs

Real-time machine measurements such as depth, ROP and general rig operational status functions are displayed at various locations around the rig and available over the internet

Real-time and historical trends allow for detailed analysis and reporting. Data trending is presented as variables against time as well as depth based charts. Again, this data is displayed at various locations around the rig and over the internet.
