Abbott Laboratories Ltd. – Cootehill

Company Profile

Abbott Laboratories is a diversified health care company that discovers, develops, manufactures and markets innovative products and services – from prevention and diagnosis to treatment and cure. Abbott Ireland based in Cootehill Town, manufactures a range of nutritional infant formulae on a 5,300 square Metre facility and employs over 150 people. The plant is totally dedicated to providing products of the highest quality standard to its customers.

The Cootehill plant produces a range of infant formulae in all pack sizes under the brand name "Similac". The range of infant formulae includes "Similac", "Similac with Iron" and "Similac PM 60/40" To complement the range of "Similac" infant formulae Cootehill manufactures a range of follow on formulae under the brand name of "Gain". The range includes "Gain" and "Gain Plus".

Situation

In a drive to consolidate plant data with enterprise reporting systems, Abbott Laboratories had a requirement to consolidate data from a water treatment plant SCADA system (Wonderware InTouch / Siemens PLCs) and a plant facility monitoring SCADA system (Schneider SMS 1500). This would provide an overall view of the amount of oil, steam, electricity and water used for a production period with a data historian used to capture the data for historical analysis.

Solution

Measuresoft, a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner with expertise in this kind of system integration project, proposed and installed a solution based on our ScadaPro product running on a Microsoft Windows 2000 PC.

The ScadaPro system was configured to acquire data from a network of Siemens PLCs on a Profibus DP network. Communication between the ScadaPro system and the PLCs was established using OPC over a LAN. The ScadaPro system was also configured to acquire data from a network of Schneider data acquisition devices on a fiber-optic network. Communication between ScadaPro system and the Schneider system was also established using OPC over a LAN.

Datascan Solo output modules were used to drive a claxon alarm from both systems.

The ScadaPro system provides users with real-time mimic displays of oil, steam, electricity and water usage. An overview display provides that ability to drill down into any area of the plant utilities and water treatment area for more detailed information.

Abbott Ireland now has a consolidated system that:

  • Provides real-time data from two separate. systems – bridging two ‘islands of automation’.

  • Produces meaningful trend information and reports.

  • Generates reports automatically at end of a shift.

  • Provides an archive of data results for traceability purposes.

Comprehensive data historian features provide data on a daily, weekly and monthly basis for reporting. The ScadaPro Trends package allows for detailed analysis of real-time and historical data. Ad-hoc Trends can be created in a matter of minutes.

Benefits

The system provides Abbott Ireland with very important production, and utility information. The data produced assists Abbott Ireland in its reporting and traceability requirements.

About OPC

OPC (originally OLE for Process Control) is an industry standard created with the collaboration of a number a leading worldwide automation and hardware software suppliers working in cooperation with Microsoft. The standard defines method for exchanging real-time automation data among PC-based clients using Microsoft operating systems.

OPC consists of a standard set of interfaces, properties, and methods for use in process-control and manufacturing-automation applications to enable communication among diverse process control devices, regardless of the controlling software.

The OPC standard was developed and is being maintained by the OPC Foundation, an independent, non-profit consortium of more than 200 companies. The OPC Foundation charter is to leverage Microsoft technologies to develop industry-standard specifications for multi-vendor hardware/software interoperability between automation/control applications, field systems/devices, and business/office applications in the manufacturing industries. The OPC Foundation website can be found at http://www.opcfoundation.org.

Measuresoft is a member of the OPC Foundation.
